Six-Year Maintenance/Hydrostatic Testing
The six-year maintenance and hydrostatic testing are both required by NFPA 10 (Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers) and other local codes to ensure your extinguishers remain safe, effective and compliant over time.
Why is Maintenance and Testing Needed?
Six-year Maintenance:
- Over time, the internal components can degrade, especially the valve assembly, O-rings, seals, and gaskets.
- Even if it hasn’t been used, moisture, vibration, temperature swings, and pressure can cause internal wear or leakage.
Hydrostatic Testing:
- The extinguisher cylinder is a pressure vessel. Over time, metal fatigue or corrosion can make it unsafe, and if the cylinder fails under pressure, it can explode.
- Hydrostatic testing checks the cylinder’s structural integrity by filling it with water and pressurizing it well beyond normal operating pressure.
